Custom steel joists fabricated by Conrad CCW being craned over an entire house from the street side under a deep blue sky

Structural steel & welding

The trade no other Denver cutting sub carries — field welding, structural reinforcement, and onsite fabrication, backed by decades on steel.

C-04.1 · In position

Field welding

Overhead, vertical, out of position, in occupied buildings. The steel doesn't come to the shop; we go to the steel.

Conrad welder in full leathers running an overhead weld on RTU reinforcement angles inside an occupied building, sparks falling below the arc

Overhead, over an operating space

On a recent tenant improvement we welded RTU reinforcement angles overhead in a building that stayed open the whole time. Full leathers, a dedicated fire watch, protection below the arc. The tenant never closed and the steel went in on schedule.

Hot work in an occupied building is mostly planning: permits, fire watch, containment, and a weld sequence agreed with the GC before anyone strikes an arc. We sort all of that before we mobilize, not the morning of.

  • All positions, including overhead
  • Hot work permits and fire watch, planned in advance
  • Reinforcement angles, embeds, and connections

Precision welds in finished spaces

Not every structural weld happens on bare steel in a shell building. We welded reinforcement inside a custom fireplace enclosure at a high-end condo, working around finishes the owner had already paid for.

In that kind of space, finish protection gets written into the weld plan: spark containment, heat management, and a cleanup that leaves nothing behind but the steel. If your scope has structural work inside a finished unit, we've done that job before.

C-04.2 · Built onsite

Fabricate and install

When the assembly is too big to ship, we build it where it lives.

Custom steel storage rack for masonry forms, fabricated and welded onsite by Conrad CCW because it was too large to ship assembled

Assemblies too large to ship

A large client needed a steel storage rack for masonry forms. Built in a shop, it wouldn't fit on a truck. So we fabricated and welded it onsite, to their spec, in the yard where it would be used. One mobilization, no freight problem, no field-splicing a shop assembly that was never going to fit.

The same approach covers bollards. On a recent parking garage job we cored the holes, fabricated the bollards, and set them at the roll-up door track. One contract, one sub to call.

  • Racks, frames, and miscellaneous steel
  • Fabricated to your spec, welded in place
  • Fabricate-and-install under a single contract

C-04.3 · Set in place

Structural steel

Fabricate, deliver, and crane-set. Beams and joists placed to the tolerances the drawings call for.

Crane-set, to tolerance

On a custom residential build, we set structural beams by crane, one pick at a time, placed to tight tolerances so the framing crew behind us didn't have to fight the steel. Rigging plan, pick sequence, and spotters were worked out with the GC before the crane showed up.

The companion job is the one in the photo at the top of this page: custom joists, fabricated by Conrad, craned over the entire house from the street side and set into place. Street-side picks over an existing structure take real planning. We've done them, and we'll quote yours.

  • Joists, beams, and reinforcement steel
  • Rigging and pick plans coordinated with the GC
  • Tight-access and over-structure picks

C-04.4 · Weld schedule

Weld schedule

What the welding scope typically covers. Send your drawings and we'll confirm the approach.

Welding capability — typical scope

These are typical capabilities, not hard limits. If your spec calls for something outside the table, ask.

Conrad CCW is led by a career welder and welding inspector. Weld quality here gets checked the way an inspector checks it. More on that on the about page.

Common questions

Welding FAQ

Do you do mobile / on-site welding?

Yes. Field rigs run across the Denver metro and the Front Range. Most of our welding is done on your site: in position, in occupied buildings, or in the yard where the assembly will live. If the piece can't come to a shop, that's normal for us.

Can you weld in winter?

Yes. Preheat and procedure follow the weld spec, and cold steel gets brought to temperature before anyone welds on it. Front Range winters don't surprise us. Schedule doesn't stop in January and neither do we.

Can one contract cover cutting AND the steel?

Yes. That's the point of Conrad CCW. If you're cutting an opening that needs a lintel, coring for bollards, or demoing to steel that then needs reinforcement, one sub carries the whole scope: openings, lintels, embeds, and reinforcement under one contract. See all services for how the trades fit together.
